CARMEN LINARES, CARLOS HERRERA, PÉREZ REVERTE, FERNANDO TRUEBA, ESPARTACO AND QUIQUE DACOSTA, WILL RECEIVE CASTILLETES DE ORO FROM THE CANTE DE LAS MINAS 2014
This year the Catedral del Cante Prize will be for India.
The International Festival del Cante de las Minas once again in 2014 plans to develop a cultural agenda of the highest level, as has been the custom throughout recent years, with great personalities of the cultural and social life of our country who will be going to go La Unión this summer to collect their Gold Castilletes, the highest institutional distinction awarded by the event.
On this occasion, the awards have gone to singer Carmen Linares, journalist and writer Carlos Herrera, writer and academic Arturo Pérez Reverte, film director Fernando Trueba, bullfighter Juan Antonio Ruiz and bull-breeder «Espartaco”, and the chef Quique Dacosta.
The announcement was made this morning at a press conference by the Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Region of Murcia, Pedro Alberto Cruz, and the Mayor of La Unión and Executive Chairman of the Cante de las Minas Foundation, Francisco Bernabé, who unanimously highlighted the enormous prestige of the winners, whose names, in this way, become part of the list of illustrious celebrities who have previously received these awards.
In this sense, Bernabé highlighted the impeccable and extraordinary careers of each and every one of them, authentic geniuses and each individual number one in their respective fields, as well as being people who have always been known for their love for the best flamenco, starting with Carmen Linares, living legend of flamenco; journalist Carlos Herrera, one of the most important opinion leaders of our country; writer Perez Reverte, one of the most important and consolidated writers in the Spanish language; director Fernando Trueba, who was worthy of an Oscar from Hollywood; bullfighter «Espartaco» without a doubt one of the major legends of bullfighting; and chef Quique Dacosta, already included in the great Olympian level of three stars in the Michelin Guide.
In addition, the Cathedral del Cante Award, which honors those nations which have worked in favor of flamenco art around the world, this year is for India, the first country in May 2013 that was visited by Las Minas Flamenco Tour, our Festival’s internationalization project, with a round-trip journey that had its continuity in August last year with the performance in La Unión of «Flamenco Roots» (Raíces Flamencas), the group of Indian and Spanish musicians who merged their talents in a memorable show that featured the best and most authentic music from both cultures.
Furthermore, the Gold Carbides, which recognize the work done on behalf of the International Festival del Cante de las Minas, have been granted in this edition to Lorenzo Aurea, journalist of the daily news section of Spanish Television, Antonio Merono «Jayam», official photographer of the Festival, Federico Vazquez, promoter of the selection process in Extremadura, and Bodega Lloret, historic hotel in La Unión which has been the venue for flamenco encounters since the birth of the Festival.
And lastly, the Trovero Marin Award, intended to honor the best promotional work of the art of the trovo, has been awarded to Joaquín Sánchez «The Palmesano» for his sensational work as director and teacher of the Trovo School of La Unión, while the Rojo El Alpargatero Award, dedicated to recognizing the best work in favor of flamenco music in the world of flamenco associations, goes to the Peña Juan Breva of Malaga for its wonderful and invaluable work in this regard.
CARMEN LINARES
«Cantaora» is the title of one of the recordings of Carmen Linares because she is the undisputed singer of our time.
Born in Linares (Jaén) she has carved out a privileged place for herself in the world of flamenco by her own merits, having become one of the most sought-after and international interpreters of flamenco singing.
If Carmen is a cornerstone of current flamenco song, she is also one of the best who transmits to us the heritage of a female tradition that has always been present in the very origins of flamenco singing. Moreover, the person who sings is Carmen Linares. There’s no copying, she brings her accent, her interpretive intensity to update a musical and literary legacy of the first order.
Her family brought her to Madrid in 1955 at the age of 3, where she met the great veteran singers Pepe de la Matrona, Juan Varea, Rafael Romero and Fosforito. At the end of the decade began her professional career in dance companies such as Paco Romero and Carmen Mora, making her first record in 1970 accompanied by Juan «Habichuela». Then would come the intense professional world of tablaos, Torres Bermejas, «Chinitas» – bringing together talents such as Camarón, Enrique Morente, Perla de Cádiz, Serranito, the Habichuelas … And that’s how it all started.
Carmen Linares’ voice was chosen to revive the original version of «El Amor Brujo» de Falla, at the opening of the 6th Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla. This constant search for new forms of expression, has led to an enriching art capable of combining flamenco singing with chamber groups and symphony orchestras. She was one of the first flamenco artists, invited by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, to perform at Lincoln Center. The New York Times described her as a singer with «an extraordinary expressive power.»
The discography of Carmen Linares, which she has always taken great care of, has been critically acclaimed and has received important awards:

CARLOS HERRERA
Carlos Herrera is a well-known Spanish journalist who has developed his career mainly on radio, although he has also done outstanding work in other media, such as television and newspapers.
Radio
He is a licensed physician, but has never practiced because he has always been dedicated to the world of communication where he has managed to become one of the leading exponents of Spanish journalism.
His radio debut was in 1977 on Radio Sevilla, afterwards working at Mataró Radio.
In following years he worked at Miramar Barcelona Radio and Radio Popular in Seville and Madrid, alternatively, where he did shows like «Spain in Pyjamas» (“España en Pijama”) and «Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf.» (“Caperucita y El Lobo”).
Eventually, he entered the circuit of the large national chains such as SER, where he presented «Songs of my Being» (“Coplas de mi Ser”) and COPE, in 1997, with «The Morning» (“La Mañana”). After a two-year stint with Canal Sur Radio, along with Naranjo, Hugo de Vero, Luis Baras, Carlos Santos, Inmaculada González and others, he went on to make the program «Good Morning» (“Buenos Días”) (1999) on Radio Nacional de España..
In the 2001-2002 season he began working at Onda Cero, with the program «Herrera, Period», which in September 2002 was renamed «Herrera On the Air” (due to the imminent arrival of the new chain Punto Radio).
Sections like «Courses on Good Manners by Josemi» or, especially, «The Time of the Matches» (about which two books have been written), have made history and are today an example of the genius to which Spanish radio can aspire, and a model for future journalists in this medium.
In September of 2004, he took over from Luis del Olmo the mornings of Onda Cero with the program “Herrera on the Air”, which he directs and presents from 6:00 in the morning to 12:30, Monday to Friday.
Televisión
His work on television has also been noteworthy. He began his career with the presentation of the daily newscast in 1985.
With the same chain, during the 1988-1989 season, he went from informative to musical programs, and was the head of «Saturday Night».
The following year he was hired by the Andalusian autonomous channel Canal Sur, to head the series «Las Coplas,» where he was able to meet stars of lyrical Spanish song.
Upon returning to TVE he presented the program “Primero Izquierda“(1991-1992).
Later on would come “The Program of Carlos Herrera” (1996-1997) and “That’s Life” (1999) broadcast by Canal Sur and Spanish TV. He was the master of ceremonies for the opening ceremony of the World Athletics Championships in 1999 in Seville, and the 15th Mediterranean Games in Almería in 2005.
During 2002-2003 season, he was panel member on the morning show of Antena 3, “The First Coffee” with Carmen Gurruchaga, and towards the end of 2003, he was on that program’s successor, “The Answer”.

- television reporter, covering international conflicts during that period. He worked twelve years as a newspaper reporter at the newspaper Pueblo, and nine in the
- news services of Spanish Television (TVE), as a specialist in armed conflict.
- As a reporter, Arturo Pérez-Reverte has covered, among other conflicts, the war in Cyprus, various phases of the war in Lebanon, the war in Eritrea, the campaign
- of 1975 in the Sahara, The Sahara War, the Falklands War, the war of El Salvador, the Nicaraguan war, the war of Chad, the Libyan crisis, the wars of the Sudan,
- the war in Mozambique, the war in Angola, the coup in Tunisia, etc.. The most recent conflicts he has covered are: the Romanian Revolution (1989-90), the
- war in Mozambique (1990), the crisis and Gulf War (1990-91), the war in Croatia (1991) and the war in Bosnia (1992-93-94).
- Since 1991, he has continuously written an opinion page in XLSemanal, supplement of the Vocento group distributed simultaneously in 25 Spanish newspapers,
- and which has become one of the most read sections of the Spanish press, exceeding 4,500,000 readers.
El Húsar(1986), El Maestro de Esgrima (1988), La Tabla de Flandes (1990), El Club Dumas(1993), La Sombra del Águila (1993), Territorio Comanche(1994), Un Asunto de Honor (Cachito)(1995),Obra Breve (1995), La Piel del Tambor(1995), Patente de Corso (1998), La Carta Esférica(2000), Con Ánimo de Ofender(2001), La Reina del Sur (2002), Cabo Trafalgar (2004), No me Cogeréis Vivo (2005), El Pintor de Batallas (2006), Un Día de Cólera (2007), Ojos Azules (2009), Cuando Éramos Honrados Mercenarios(2009), El Asedio (2010) and El Tango de la Guardia Vieja (2012), are titles which continue to be present on the best-seller shelves of bookstores, and consolidate a great literary career beyond our borders, and for which the author has received major literary awards. His work has been translated into 40 languages. Arturo Pérez-Reverte has one of the most prominent catalogues of current literature.
Towards the end of 1996 Las Aventuras del Capitán Alatriste came out, and since that time it has become one of the most successful literary series. For now there are the following titles which have achieved unmatched sales in their Spanish editions: El Capitán Alatriste(1996), Limpieza de Sangre (1997), El Sol de Breda (1998), El Oro del Rey(2000), El Caballero del Jubón Amarillo (2003), Corsarios de Levante (2006) y El Puente de los Asesinos (2011). For a very long time in the realm of novels there had not been any character like Diego Alatriste, who was adopted by readers who demanded his continuity. A character on a level with Sherlock Holmes, Marlowe or Hércules Poirot.
Alatriste depicts a Spanish captain of Flanders who is not in fact a captain, but it matters little. A perfectly drawn character, with his great virtues and great faults, carefully depicted in the era of the seventeenth century and geography of the times, surrounded by friends who have made history, participants in the main achievements of the era. A character to be cherished forever.
Arturo Pérez-Reverte became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy on June 12, 2003, reading a speech entitled “The Talk of a Brave Seventeenth Century”.

First Puerta del Príncipe
In 1980 Espartaco fought 35 times, and more than 50 in 1981. These were preparatory years leading up to the first major triumph, which took place in La Maestranza during the 1982 fair. Espartaco earned the opening of the prestigious Puerta del Príncipe door and went looking for victory in Madrid the day of his confirmation, without success, although that did not prevent him from leading the ranking with a total of 63 bullfights. Espartaco did not fight fewer than fifty times per year in any of the following years, during which time he faced some difficult animals.
La hegemony of Espartaco
Proof of Espartaco’s hegemony since his 1985 triumph in Madrid are the seven years leading up to 1991 – Espartaco occupied first place in the ranking, approaching a hundred fights each time. During those years, Espartaco stood his ground in the main plazas and triumphed in Madrid in 1992, where he was conceded an ear in each encounter, and Seville, where in 1989 he crossed the Puerta del Príncipe Prince door for the fifth time.
After 1991, Espartaco refocused his career. He fought less, and sought out the quality of his bullfighting. In this sense, one of his masterpieces is remembered in Sevilla the time he fought the bull Barquito of Núñez de Cuvillo during the fair of 1993. Injury to ligaments operated on in December 1994 diminished his strength and limited him in the 1995 campaign. A relapse prevented Espartaco from being in the arena that year, but the mark left in bullfighting made Juan Antonio an ever-present force.
Juan Antonio Ruiz would have to undergo three long years of recovery, surgery and a long but effective rehabilitation. And so it was that late in the year 1998, Espartaco announced his return to the bullring for the 1999 season.
His reappearance in the arena took place on February 6th in Olivenza (Badajoz) along with Enrique Ponce and El Juli with bulls of Juan Pedro Domecq; he took three ears and and was carried out on shoulders. With the campaign well on-track and enjoying significant triumphs in bullrings such as Seville, Córdoba, and other places, apparently he was exposing his body to too much physical stress, and his ailing knee suffered the effects in early August.
Once recuperated, Espartaco was confirmed in the Monumental bullring of Mexico on November 21st. The year 2000 was a very bad year. No sooner did it begin, in Fallas, than a bull from El Ventorillo gored him seriously. He had a hard time getting back on track, and when he did, he suffered another injury, this time in his hand, causing him to cut the season short. Fully recovered and aware of the consequences, in 2001 he announced his retirement from bullfighting.
QUIQUE DACOSTA
Quique Dacosta, born in 1972, has developed his professional career as a chef since 1986.
